Dunkeld Visitor Platform

Nestled amongst native landscapes with a spectacular view of the Grampians Ranges, this Visitor Platform provides a new and unique tourist attraction to the township of Dunkeld.

  • Date: 1 August 2023
  • Client: Southern Grampians Shire Council
  • Project Type: Viewing Platform

About this Project

The Visitor Platform has been designed and constructed by the MKM Team to seamlessly integrate with the native landscape it is surrounded by. The structure, platform and decking curves around and works together with the natural features of the space, utilising a mix of modern aesthetics and traditional materials of the Grampians ranges.

The Visitor Platform features a striking handcrafted curved metal roof as its standout feature, complemented by carefully arranged LED lighting that artistically mimics the delicate veins of a eucalyptus leaf. The pathway leading to a curved timber bench seat is paved with Grampians sandstone crazy paving, all wrapping around a large locally sourced Grampians sandstone, foraged from a nearby quarry.

The centre’s lighting system operates automatically, activating at the client’s specifically requested time to promote energy efficiency and enhance visitor convenience. The pathways surrounding the centre are lined with deck lights and taller lamp posts, providing ample lighting for late-evening visitors.

With picturesque views of Mt Sturgeon and the southern end of the Grampians Ranges, this new viewing platform will serve the community for years to come as a stand out feature to the existing Dunkeld Visitor Centre, whilst providing a defined entrance to the Dunkeld side of the Grampians Peaks Trail.
